Everyone's situation is unique. As someone pointed out, usually your
success rate depends on the collective of your circumstances and not
any item in particular. This may not be true for one exception maybe,
that is luck which you can't exactly quantify. (Don't tell me that
you are illiterate and have a criminal record, too)
Ultimately what you are trying to do in a job application is to
justify why you, and you alone is suitable for the position you
are applying for. What makes you stand out? This could simply be
something as "trivial" as that you met the company heads
in person and had a coffee in a casual context. Or perhaps a brief
but positive introduction by a friend. Something personal usually
helps. If you only depend on the electronic or paper copy of your
completed application, then don't expect too much unless you have
something outstanding in there.
Think from the selector's perspetive, that would help you in enhancing
your prospects. The enhancement could be doing internships, finding
suitable projects, self-learning professional skills, or simply
"sexing up" your CV and/or Cover Letter. The enhancement
could also be a familiar face (one is more likely to trust someone
s/he has met), or a familiar voice, etc. This is where networking
is useful.
Finally, I don't think you can get too much help in looking for
a job here on this forum. Some general pointers perhaps, but for
real substantial help, you need to help yourself in the real world.
