the two types of jobs (1) working for a company (2) running own business,
there should be two types of discussions. let's keep them separate.
in terms of job type (1) in a foreign culture, you will encounter
numerous difficulties, and not just at the job searching stage.
getting your foot in the door is a key step, but which door could
be but not necessarily always is the crucial.
one could get maximum exposure in a big company, but have little
responsibility, or have little exposure to the industry or small
number of clients but have greater responsibility relatively in
a small company.
big companies may well have standard requirements for recruitment,
in terms of academic background and past work experience, as well
as personality fits. one of the main reasons i got my job was that
my company deemed that i would get on well with virtually all of
my colleagues.
small companies has probably much more flexible recruiting policies,
so much so that the decision is probably purely decided by your
point of contact (your interviewer).
whatever job you go for, whatever company you go for, the key is
preparation. preparation involves targeting as much as possible
the right companies for you (in terms of qualifications and suitability),
and then actually preparing for the applications (cvs, cover letters)
and subsequently interviews.
